Export and Sharing

DrawMotive supports several ways to export and share your diagrams.

Export Formats

PNG

Export your diagram as a PNG raster image. This is the best choice for:

  • Embedding in presentations (PowerPoint, Google Slides)
  • Including in documents (Word, Google Docs)
  • Sharing on messaging platforms (Slack, Teams)
  • Quick previews

The PNG export captures the current viewport at the rendered resolution. Dimensions metadata is embedded for accurate scaling when printing.

SVG

Export your diagram as an SVG vector graphic. SVG is ideal for:

  • High-resolution displays and print materials
  • Web embedding where the diagram needs to scale
  • Further editing in vector graphics tools (Figma, Illustrator)
  • Documentation sites that need crisp diagrams at any zoom level

PDF

Export your diagram as a PDF document. PDF works best for:

  • Print-ready output with precise dimensions
  • Formal documentation and reports
  • Archival copies

How to Export

  1. Open the diagram you want to export
  2. Select Export from the toolbar or menu
  3. Choose the format (PNG, SVG, or PDF)
  4. The file downloads to your default download location

Sharing Diagrams

Generate a shareable link to your diagram. Recipients with the link can view the diagram in their browser. If they have edit permissions, they can also make changes.

Embedding in Confluence

When using the Confluence integration, diagrams are embedded as PNG images directly in Confluence pages. The macro handles the export automatically — when you save a diagram in the editor, it generates a PNG preview that displays inline on the page. See the Confluence integration guide for details.

Embedding in VS Code

The VS Code extension uses .draw.png files — PNG images that embed the full diagram data. This lets you version-control diagrams in your repository and edit them with a double-click. See the VS Code integration guide for details.

Storage

Local Storage

All diagrams are stored in your browser's IndexedDB. This means:

  • Diagrams load without a network request
  • Your work persists across browser sessions
  • Storage capacity is typically 50–100MB+ depending on browser

Cloud Storage

When cloud sync is enabled, diagram snapshots are stored in S3-compatible object storage (Cloudflare R2). Each export includes:

  • A PNG preview image
  • Drawing metadata (title, author, dimensions)
  • Serialized graphics objects (for full reconstruction)

Cloud storage provides backup, sharing, and cross-device access.

Tips

  • PNG is the most broadly compatible format for sharing
  • Use SVG when the diagram will be printed or displayed at varying sizes
  • Cloud-synced diagrams include a complete representation of your drawing, not just an image — they can be fully restored and edited
